According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Russia appreciated that in June of this year Damascus announced the recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics MOSCOW, August 23.
/tass/. Syria expressed Russia's support and understanding of the goals of the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. This was stated on Tuesday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference following talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad.
"We expressed our gratitude to our Syrian friends for their full understanding of what is happening in and around Ukraine. Our Syrian friends have confirmed their support for the goals that Russia has set for itself. They are aware of the reasons that have led to the current situation," he said.
"These reasons lie in the fact that for decades the West categorically refused to fulfill its obligations to respect the principle of indivisibility of security and, contrary to all its promises, continued to expand NATO to the east, simultaneously pushing military infrastructure to the borders of the Russian Federation and adopting doctrinal documents that directly declared Russia an enemy and an enemy," Lavrov explained.
According to the minister, the Russian Federation also appreciated that in June of this year Damascus announced the recognition of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. "We see in this the commitment of our Syrian friends to the fundamental principle according to which the peoples themselves have the right to determine their fate, <...> the Ukrainian state in this case did not recognize them (peoples - approx. TASS) legitimate rights and did not represent the interests of residents of Donetsk and Luhansk regions," Lavrov stressed.
