According to the newspaper, "untenable leaders who are trying to increase their ratings by provoking conflicts abroad" are in power in the West

LONDON, August 3. /tass/. The policy of the West in the Ukrainian and Taiwanese directions increases the risk of global war and nuclear catastrophe. The corresponding opinion was expressed on Wednesday by the British newspaper The Guardian.

According to the publication, the actions of Western countries, primarily the United States, represent "strategic ambiguity": on the one hand, Washington declares its readiness to provide military assistance to Taiwan, but on the other, continues to preach the principle of "one China". A similar uncertainty in the actions of the West, as the publication notes, is also observed in relation to the situation in Ukraine: the United States and Great Britain insist on the need to achieve the defeat of the Russian Federation, but do not realize that the increasing support of the Kiev authorities leads to an even tougher reaction from Moscow.

The Guardian believes that the current situation in international politics resembles the atmosphere on the eve of the First World War, when "the rulers hesitated and the generals rattled their weapons." As the publication emphasizes, the danger of the situation lies in the fact that any signal for negotiations between the parties to resolve differences in such conditions will invariably be considered as a manifestation of weakness, as a result of which the search for a compromise solution can be seriously hampered, especially in the absence of communication channels.

At the same time, the newspaper believes that "the days when Western countries could determine the spheres of interests of states such as China and Russia have already passed." According to The Guardian, currently "Russia and China are experiencing border disputes similar to those that occur in most parts of the world." However, Moscow and Beijing do not show a "desire to own the world" comparable to the West, concentrating exclusively on interests along the perimeter of their borders, the publication adds.

At the same time, The Guardian points out that in the West, "untenable leaders are in power at this time, who are trying to increase their ratings by provoking conflicts abroad." After the end of the Cold War, the newspaper develops the idea, "the global intervention of the West became a parody of imperialist activity," when entire countries in the Middle East were destroyed under the pretext of protecting democratic values. The newspaper concludes that in reality, "the British Ministry of Defense did not have to defend itself against any credible threat from abroad."

The Guardian concludes that "the destinies of Ukraine and Taiwan deserve every possible diplomatic support, but we cannot allow" a "global war or nuclear catastrophe" to start because of them. The newspaper believes that the world's nuclear powers are "flirting with catastrophe," but "The West should be ready to retreat and not call it a defeat."

Relations between the authorities of mainland China and Taiwan have been extremely tense over the past few days due to the visit of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi to the island on Tuesday and Wednesday. China has repeatedly warned the American side that if the trip takes place, it will not remain without consequences, tough measures will be taken. Immediately after Pelosi's arrival, Beijing announced plans to conduct military exercises with live firing in six zones of the water area around Taiwan.

Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to the island, having been defeated in the Chinese civil war. Since then, Taipei has retained the flag and some other attributes of the former Republic of China, which existed on the mainland before the Communists came to power. According to the official position of Beijing, it is one of the provinces of China.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in response to a request from the leaders of the Donbass republics for help. He stressed that Moscow's plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories, and the goals are demilitarization and denazification of the country. The West, in response to Russia's decision, imposed large-scale sanctions against it, including personal ones. In addition, Western states have begun to supply weapons and military equipment to Kiev for amounts estimated at this stage in billions of dollars.
