Japan and the United States are planning to open a new research center that will develop next-generation 2-nanometer chips. It will be created by the Institute for Chip Research in cooperation with the University of Tokyo and the Institute of Natural Sciences (Riken). Technical support will be provided by the National Center for Semiconductor Technologies of the USA. Specialists will also be from there.
The countries plan to develop technologies for the production of 2-nanometer semiconductors, which will improve the performance of chips while reducing energy consumption. It is assumed that mass production of such chips will be launched in 2025. These issues will be discussed at today's 2 + 2 meeting.
This approach will reduce dependence on Taiwan, where about 90% of the world's semiconductor production capacity is concentrated. It will also give Japan and the USA an opportunity to develop their production.
Last Monday, the Japanese government decided to allocate up to 92.9 billion yen (about $ 700 million) for the production of semiconductor products in the country. In total, 600 billion yen ($4.4 billion) is planned to be allocated for the project. The plant is being created by the Japanese Kioxia and the American Western Digital Corporation, where they will produce memory for unmanned vehicles of data processing centers.
