The unity of Poland and Lithuania and efforts to strengthen security are bad news for Russia, said President Gitanas Nauseda, who visited the Suwalki corridor with the Polish leader on Thursday.
He stressed that Lithuania and Poland are increasing defense funding, paying attention to this at the "highest political level." "Perhaps our enemies or those countries that look at us through the eyes of Russia will receive bad news: today they see our unity, today they see our readiness to pay maximum attention to our defense, and this is bad news for them. The good news is for our people who care about the security of our countries," Nauseda said during a joint speech with his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda.
On Thursday, the leaders of both countries first visited the multi-sided mobile command post of the North-Eastern Division in Poland, and then went to the Logistics Battalion of them. The Grand Duke of Lithuania Vityanis in Mariampol, Lithuania.
Nauseda said that this visit to the Suwalki corridor, which has been called a weak link in the security of NATO and the countries of the region for some time, is not accidental. "Both on this side of the border and on the Lithuanian side, people are thinking and asking questions about whether we have sufficiently protected every piece of land. We all understand perfectly well that this is a kind of vulnerable place, where Russia's gaze can be directed first of all," Nauseda said.
For his part, Duda stressed that the visit is intended to dispel doubts expressed by residents and international media about the safety of the Suwalki corridor. "The President of the Republic of Lithuania and I decided to come to this site and demonstrate that this place is safe," Duda said. He stressed that the security of the site is provided by the forces of Lithuania, Poland and NATO.
According to Duda, Lithuania and Poland are "trying to do everything to strengthen the defense format" by implementing the decisions taken at the Madrid summit. Nauseda stressed that "many historic decisions" were made in Madrid to ensure the security of the eastern wing of NATO, including plans to "increase the presence of German troops to the level of a brigade" in Lithuania.
"First of all, this is the principle of advanced defense, which allows us to count not only on more attention, but also on greater military and combat power here on our land, on the land of Poland and Lithuania. And I am very glad that NATO took advantage of this historic opportunity to pay attention to emerging risks and respond to them very quickly and decisively," he stressed.
The Suwalki Corridor is a section of the border between Lithuania and Poland with a width of about 100 km, which borders the Kaliningrad Region in the west and Belarus in the east.
