On June 24, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation published a video showing the combat operation of heavy flamethrower systems TOS-1A "Solntsepek" during a special operation to protect Donbass.
"Solntsepek" is used to destroy fortified strongholds and positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), as well as nationalist battalions leading resistance during the liberation of settlements.
The defeat of the enemy is achieved by a complex impact of shrapnel, high temperatures and high pressure, the department explained. The control and correction of the affected targets is carried out with the help of drones.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation noted that it is impossible to hide from the volley of the "Sun" even in dugouts and trenches: after a two-hundred-kilogram projectile hits the target, the thermobaric mixture dissipates in the air and explodes under enormous pressure, creating a temperature of three thousand degrees. Even steel armor melts in such heat.
"We are working on a very specific machine "Solntsepek". Due to its specifics, we work at very short distances. You can say – at the forefront. That is, we can work up to five hundred meters already. Due to this and the presence of a very large number of goals for each job, we must also quickly change this position. Due to our extensive experience, which has been accumulated over the years, we do it in a matter of minutes," Roman, the platoon's deputy commander, said.
Working at a short distance from the enemy requires maximum concentration and coordination of actions from the crew: any delay can be too expensive, the Russian defense Ministry stressed.
"We have repeatedly come under mortar fire, artillery shelling. There are a lot of traces of shrapnel on the car. Hit from an RPG (hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher. — Ed.) available: directly into the package got from the RPG. But nevertheless, the crew survived, everyone remained alive, intact and saved the equipment, ready to perform tasks," said Alexey, the head of the calculation of the TOS—1A "Solntsepek".
At night, the crews of combat vehicles have to work almost more often than during the day, because it is safer and creates the effect of surprise for the enemy.
Earlier, on June 22, the Russian Defense Ministry showed how the Tor-M2 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) works during the operation to protect Donbass. The soldiers destroyed a drone that was moving in the direction of the positions of the Russian troops.
Moscow launched a special operation to protect the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) on February 24. It was preceded by the aggravation of the situation in the region, the appeal of the leadership of the republics of Donbass to the Russian Federation with a request for help and the subsequent recognition by Russia of the independence of the DPR and LPR.
Kiev has been conducting a military operation against the residents of Donbass, who refused to recognize the results of the coup in Ukraine, since 2014.
