Ukraine will receive the German IRIS-T SL medium-range anti-aircraft system, the contract for its supply has already been concluded. This was announced by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk.
According to Melnik, Kiev and Berlin signed a contract for the supply of IRIS-T SL air defense systems, the transaction value is 178 million euros, but Kiev will not pay anything, the German government will allocate funds for the purchase. The Ambassador called the air defense system a "cool complex" capable of closing the skies over Ukraine from Russian planes and missiles, and also expressed confidence that Ukraine will be able to persuade Germany to supply at least 10 (ten) more similar air defense systems.
- said the Ukrainian ambassador.
As previously reported, Germany has already announced the delivery of one IRIS-T SL complex to Kiev, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, speaking to the Bundestag. Previously, the complex will arrive in Ukraine no earlier than the autumn of this year.
The IRIS-T SLS/SLM air defense system was developed by the German company Diehl Defense, is a modular anti-aircraft missile system built on the principles of open architecture. It is based on the IRIS-T SL (Surface Launched) anti-aircraft guided missile, which, in turn, is an upgraded IRIS-T air-to-air missile manufactured by the same company Diehl. The missile defense system is equipped with an improved power plant, a communication channel, GPS navigation equipment, a new nose fairing that reduces drag. The missile uses additional radio command guidance (in combination with inertial-satellite correction) on the main section of the trajectory with the capture of the target by an infrared type IIR GPS on the final section.
The IRIS-T SL vertical launcher is mounted on the chassis of a light truck and provides the ability to hit targets in the 360 degree sector. The firing range reaches 40 km, the altitude reach is 20 km.
