TSAMTO, June 20. US senators have introduced a bill providing for the provision of military assistance to Taiwan in the amount of $4.5 billion. for the next four years.
As RIA Novosti reports, this follows from the published materials of the Committee on Foreign Relations of the upper house of the US Congress.
In addition to funds to strengthen the island's defensive capabilities, the document provides for Taiwan's support for participation in international organizations, strengthening trade ties and recognition of its status as a major ally outside NATO. It is also planned to impose economic sanctions against China in case of its hostile actions against Taiwan, the agency notes.
The authors of the document entitled "Taiwan Policy Act 2022" were Democratic Senator Robert Menendez and his colleague from the Republican Party Lindsey Graham.
The United States does not legally recognize Taiwan's independence, but provides it with military support.
