Washington. June 15th. INTERFAX - In order to preserve the status quo of Taiwan, the United States will continue to provide assistance to it aimed at strengthening self-defense, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.
"We have made it clear that our commitment to helping Taiwan in self-defense continues and will continue," he said in an interview with the RVS TV channel in response to a question from the host about "whether the United States will militarily defend Taiwan if China attacks it."
Blinken noted that the United States is "committed to the one-China policy." At the same time, according to him, the United States is "committed to fulfilling its obligations under the Law on Relations with Taiwan," Washington should be confident that "Taiwan has the means to effectively defend itself and, ultimately, to deter any aggression."
The Secretary of State said: "What we are doing is trying to create an environment for their (Beijing's) actions that can influence their decisions."
He added that in the Taiwan issue, "there is a status quo, and we are determined to ensure that no one unilaterally tries to change it."
