Hydrogen turbine
Researchers from the Norwegian University of Stavinger have re-equipped the university's gas mini-thermal power plant and transferred it to work on hydrogen instead of natural gas. Moreover, 100% pure hydrogen, without any impurities. According to Professor Mohsen Asadi, this is the first such achievement in the world.
The turbine of the power plant has been running on hydrogen for about a month, which makes it possible to evaluate its efficiency. It is clearly lower than it was at the time of the use of natural gas, but meets the needs of the university in generating electricity and heating water. There is no disappointment — on the contrary, scientists are very pleased that they managed to save money on the conversion of the power plant. The key point is that Norwegian engineers used existing equipment and infrastructure designed to work with natural gas. Modernization was cheap, and now they can continue to operate the old equipment, but at the same time not create emissions into the atmosphere. The downside so far is the cost of hydrogen itself, which is quite high. On the other hand, the university is now spared from having to pay a carbon tax.
