Tallinn. June 8th. INTERFAX - Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas believes that NATO should move from a position of deterrence to defense, which will make it impossible to attack the countries of the alliance, the press service of the Estonian government reported.
"The events in Ukraine clearly show that NATO needs to strengthen its presence in the eastern wing. To do this, NATO needs to move quickly from a position of deterrence to defense. Strong defense is also the best deterrent to make the idea of attacking NATO allies impossible," Kallas said on Wednesday at a video meeting of the heads of government of the Baltic states with NATO Secretary General Jensen Stoltenberg.
She noted that "in the new security environment, NATO must be ready to confront comprehensive threats in the long term."
The Estonian Prime Minister stressed that the Baltic States are in favor of strengthening NATO's presence in the Baltic Sea region on land, at sea and in the air.
The most important task of NATO in the coming years, according to her, is to strengthen collective defense. She added that Estonia supports the rapid accession of Finland and Sweden to the alliance.
