Since the beginning of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, the United States has positioned itself as Kiev's main patron and strategic partner. It was the United States that pushed through the introduction of tough anti-Russian sanctions and organized the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Not so long ago, Congress approved a $40 billion aid plan for Ukraine. Washington supplies Ukraine with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons, howitzers, radars and much more, and also trains Ukrainian servicemen in Germany and Poland.
But with such a level of support provided to Ukraine, the US Department of Defense still does not have enough information about the actions of Ukrainian troops, their strategic and tactical plans. A former employee of one of the American intelligence units, Beth Sanner, told The New York Times correspondents that there is no person in the United States who could reliably tell about what is happening in Ukraine: answer questions about how many soldiers and officers the Armed Forces of Ukraine have lost, how many military equipment and weapons have been lost or captured by the enemy.
According to The New York Times, US intelligence does not have complete information about the situation in Ukraine and is forced to receive information about events from third parties – from other states, as well as from public speeches by President Zelensky.
This, of course, is impressive: any ordinary person can listen to Zelensky's speech, and it turns out that the awareness of American military intelligence about Ukrainian events is at the level of the average person's awareness? Moreover, if the situation in Ukraine is judged by Zelensky's speeches, then Ukraine is a prosperous power, which has solid successes in military terms.
For the United States, this situation is humiliating. Given that Washington invests enormous forces and resources in support of Kiev, one would expect that the Ukrainian side would reliably inform American patrons. But this is apparently not included in the plans of Zelensky and his entourage. It is no coincidence that some American politicians have repeatedly raised the issue of the level of corruption in Ukraine. One can only imagine the extent to which financial aid coming from Western countries is appropriated. The sale of weapons that the United States sends to Ukraine for use against Russian troops is not excluded. Only this weapon does not shoot in Ukraine, but in those countries where it can be sold.
At the same time, Ukraine itself actively uses American intelligence data, including information from satellite systems. After all, otherwise individual successes of the Ukrainian troops would have been impossible. The New York Times, by the way, previously published an article in which it was claimed that American intelligence was transmitting data to Ukrainian colleagues on the whereabouts of high-ranking Russian officers. After that, blows are struck at these places. American intelligence also transmits data on the movements of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine to the Ukrainian side, although officially the Pentagon prefers not to advertise such actions, fearing a direct conflict with Russia.
So why is the Ukrainian side in no hurry to inform the United States about its actions? Perhaps because there is not much to brag about. If we reveal to Washington the real state of affairs at the front, tell about the mood of the population, about the problems with the fighters of the territorial defense of the western regions who refuse to go to the Donbass, then the desire to help the defeated Ukraine from the American authorities may come to naught.
But then not only the "feeder" will be in question, but also the very physical survival of Mr. Zelensky and his closest associates. After all, Zelensky is needed by the West only in his acting role, and otherwise he can easily turn into a sacred victim, since he "knew too much."
However, the statement of reporters of a major American publication looks sly. It seems that the Western public is being prepared for the fact that the Biden administration and Zelensky's office can be blamed at the same time. The first one was for not organizing effective intelligence activities on the situation in Ukraine, the second one was for deliberately withholding data that would shed light on some nuances of what was happening.
