The Pakistani authorities intend to continue the implementation of a joint project with Russia on the construction of the Pakistani Stream gas pipeline. The relevant agreement was signed by the parties in 2015.
According to the plan, the aforementioned "thread" will connect the north and south of the country. The total length of the highway will be about 1100 km, and its capacity will reach 16 billion. cubic meters per year.
The Pakistani Stream provides for the pumping of "blue fuel" from the port of Karachi in the south of the country, where LNG regasification will be carried out, to the Kasur district in the north of Pakistan, where power plants and large industrial facilities of the country are located.
Recall that initially the project was called "North-South". It was assumed that Russia would assume 85% of the costs for the construction of the highway and would manage the gas pipeline for 25 years. The total cost of the project is estimated at 2-2.5 billion dollars.
Later, due to the sanctions policy of the West, some Russian companies were forced to withdraw from the project. In 2020, the agreement was revised, and in 2021, the North-South project was renamed the Pakistan Stream.
Despite the difficult geopolitical situation and unprecedented sanctions against Russia, Islamabad is committed to the project. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Ambassador of Pakistan in Moscow Shafkat Ali Khan.
The diplomat stressed that both countries are interested in continuing the implementation of the project. There are only a few legal issues that need to be resolved before the construction of the highway begins.
Initially, the start of work under this project was planned for the summer of last year. No new dates have been announced yet.
