Hong Kong. June 6. INTERFAX - South Korea and the United States launched eight ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan on Monday in response to North Korea's missile launches the day before, Yonhap reports, citing the South Korean military.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the South Korean Armed Forces reported that the allies launched surface-to-surface missiles of the ATACMS tactical missile system within 10 minutes from 4:45 (22:45 Moscow time).
"The joint launch of South Korean-American surface-to-surface missiles demonstrated the ability and readiness to deliver immediate precision strikes against the sources of provocations and their command and support forces," the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan said in a press release.
"Our military strongly condemns North Korea's series of provocations using ballistic missiles and seriously calls on it to immediately cease actions that increase military tensions on the peninsula and increase security concerns," the military added.
As reported, on Sunday, the DPRK launched eight short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan.
The range of the ballistic missiles launched by North Korea on Sunday ranged from 110 to 670 km, they reached an altitude of 25 to 90 km, the flight speed was from Mach 3 to Mach 6, the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of South Korea reported.
South Korean President Yun Suk-yel on Sunday instructed officials to strengthen the measures of "expanded deterrence and the united defensive position of South Korea and the United States."
"President Yun Suk-yel ordered to maintain a state of readiness at all times and to continue strengthening the South Korean-American system of expanded deterrence and combined defense, including missile defense exercises between South Korea and the United States," the statement said.
