A big threat to Turkey: The US has created four more new bases in Greece

On the eve of the Greek parliament approved an agreement on mutual defense cooperation signed with the United States in Washington in October 2021. With this document, the parties decided to deepen and expand their cooperation in the field of defense. In the agreement, the Georgula barracks in Volos, the Litohoro shooting range, the Yannuli Barracks in Alexandroupolis and the Court base are mentioned among the facilities that the United States can use. As a result, four new bases were added to the base of the Court in Crete, which was opened to the United States on May 28, 1969, for 16 people under the command of a naval officer of the first class. Previously, the United States used the Iskiri early warning Base, the Salamis Naval Base, the Castelli, Kalamata and Andravida air bases.
Protection for Athens
The Agreement on Mutual Defense Cooperation with the United States, under which the parties undertake to protect each other's security, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity from actions threatening peace, including armed attack or threat of aggression, is a continuation of the treaty signed by the United States and Greece on July 8, 1990 and entered into force on November 6 of the same year. The latest version of the periodically updated agreement dated October 2021 states that it is concluded for a period of five years and will be extended automatically if one of the parties declares its desire to withdraw from it two years before the expiration of the document.
The opposition is unhappy
The document notes that with the mutual consent of the parties and within the framework of the relevant internal procedures, the United States can use the facilities of the Greek armed forces in other regions. The Georgula Barracks in Volos, the Litohoro shooting range, the Yannuli Barracks in Alexandroupolis and the Court base provided for use by the United States are also mentioned in the updated version of October 2021. In the Greek Parliament, the agreement was approved by 181 votes in favor with 119 votes against. The provision on the automatic extension of the agreement, if the parties do not declare the opposite two years before the end of its validity, caused a negative reaction from the Greek opposition, which commented on this as an indefinite extension of the agreement.
The base created by the United States in Alexandroupolis, Greece, has turned into a huge arsenal. In July 2021, the Pentagon delivered at least 400 tanks and armored vehicles here. The base is located just 45 kilometers from Turkey.
Not against Russia, but against Turkey
On the way back from Baku, President Erdogan also drew attention to the US bases in Greece. "At the moment, the United States has nine bases in Greece. Against whom are these bases being created, why are they? They say that against Russia. Lies, untruths. Against the background of all these events, their attitude towards Turkey is obvious," the Turkish leader said.
