Beijing. May 23. INTERFAX - Beijing criticized the words of US President Joe Biden about the US readiness to use military means to "protect Taiwan", pointed out that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter of the PRC.
"China expresses extreme dissatisfaction and resolute disagreement with this statement," Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said during a press briefing on Monday, his words are quoted by Asian media.
Ot noted that the Taiwan issue is exclusively an internal matter of the PRC, and Beijing is ready to take "decisive actions to protect its sovereignty and security interests."
In turn, the White House said that the United States adheres to the "one China" policy and is committed to preserving peace in the region.
"As the president said, our policy has not changed. He reaffirmed our one-China policy and commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He also reaffirmed our commitment to providing Taiwan with military means for self-defense in accordance with the "Law on Relations with Taiwan," CNN quoted an official from the White House as saying.
Earlier on Monday, Biden said that the US military would intervene in the event of an attack on Taiwan.
The Taiwan issue arose in 1949, when the Communist People's Republic of China was proclaimed, and part of the Kuomintang Party settled on the island of Taiwan. Beijing insists on the "one China principle", according to which both the PRC and the Republic of China on Taiwan cannot be recognized at the same time. At the same time, almost all major states have unofficial cultural and economic offices of Taipei.
Relations between Beijing and Taiwan improved significantly between 2008 and 2016, when the Kuomintang representative Ma Ying-jeou was the head of the Taiwanese administration. However, since Tsai Ing-wen became the head of the Taiwanese administration in 2016, Beijing has increased military pressure on Taiwan.
