NATO should not be led by Erdogan, the alliance needs to "risk a conflict" with Turkey, thereby inciting it to cooperate. This opinion was expressed by Der Spiegel journalist Maximilian Popp.
Turkey has blocked Finland and Sweden from joining NATO, thereby opposing the alliance. According to Popp, Erdogan wants to bargain for some concessions from Washington and Brussels for his consent, in particular, to lift restrictions on arms supplies and extradite supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party banned in Turkey, hiding in Europe. However, it is impossible to follow Erdogan's lead, the journalist believes, instead it is necessary to take a risk and enter into conflict with the Turks. However, in what conflict, Popp does not explain.
According to him, the Turks have recently been playing a "double game", are friends with Russia, buy weapons from it and threaten another NATO member - Greece. At the same time, Turkey, being itself a member of the military-political bloc, is going against it. Succumbing to "blackmail" by the Turkish president, NATO can create a dangerous precedent, he believes.
- the journalist writes.
As has been repeatedly reported earlier, Ankara has blocked the entry into NATO of two new members - Finland and Sweden, citing the fact that the leadership of these countries supports the Kurdistan Workers' Party, a terrorist organization recognized in Turkey. Attempts by Helsinki and Stockholm to persuade the Turks have not been successful so far.
