TSAMTO, May 23. The United States is ready to send weapons to Moldova if the country's government asks for it. This, as RIA Novosti reports, was stated on May 22 at a briefing in Chisinau by the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the US House of Representatives, Gregory Mix.
A delegation of US congressmen is on a working visit to the capital of Moldova.
As the agency reminds, earlier British Foreign Minister Liz Truss said in an interview with local publications that "Moldova needs to be provided with weapons according to NATO standards."
"We have such negotiations with the Moldovan government, but the assistance should not exceed the requirements of the Moldovan side. I think we need to understand whether we agree on what should happen. I don't want to go beyond what the Moldovan leadership demands of us," the American congressman said.
Last week, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that by observing neutrality, the republic allegedly remains vulnerable, noting that the country's citizens can change the situation if they express a desire to change the constitution.
Earlier, the Moldovan government gave a negative conclusion to the draft law "On the status of permanent neutrality", which was put forward by the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS).
According to the Constitution of Moldova, the republic has a neutral status, but since 1994 the country has been cooperating with NATO under an individual partnership plan, RIA Novosti notes.
