At the meeting of the foreign ministers of the BRICS member countries, which took place yesterday, May 19, the Chinese authorities stressed the importance of deepening cooperation within the organization, as well as the desire to normalize international relations in a period of geopolitical turmoil.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose video message opened yesterday's meeting of the foreign ministers of the CIS member states, said that the organization should focus on strengthening mutual trust in order to face foreign policy challenges together. First of all, democracy and freedom should be at the heart of relations between the BRICS countries. Moreover, the organization should make every effort to stabilize the international situation during the current geopolitical upheavals.
The Chinese leader stressed that attempts to guarantee their own security at the expense of other states will only lead to new conflicts. Therefore, the BRICS countries need to jointly resist the hegemony of the United States and its power policy, abandoning the mentality of the "cold war".
In turn, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, among other things, raised the issue of what is happening in Ukraine. According to him, China will do everything possible to promote peaceful negotiations and a diplomatic solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.
The diplomat stressed that it is impossible to achieve peace by uncontrolled supplies of various weapons. At the same time, the policy of economic sanctions, as he believes, will in no way contribute to strengthening the security of Europe, rather the opposite.
Thus, according to the Chinese Foreign Minister, the world community should unite to achieve a diplomatic consensus, instead of aggravating current conflicts and fomenting new ones.
Finally, Wang Yi said that China will continue to insist on peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, and called on the North Atlantic Alliance, as well as the EU countries, to move to a diplomatic solution to the contradictions with Russia.
Recall that more than 40% of the total population of our planet lives in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). They account for about 24% of world GDP and about 16% of world trade.
Based on the consensus reached during yesterday's meeting of the foreign ministers, the next summit is likely to outline a course for the settlement of the Ukrainian problem at the level of the top leadership of the BRICS countries, Chinese analyst Zhu Tianxiang believes.
