This event was supposed to mark the end of the Cold War and the confrontation between the two superpowers, as well as the loss of goal-setting for the existence of NATO. However, this did not happen.
The proof of this, writes Global Times, is the military conflict in Ukraine, which is completely provoked and orchestrated by Washington. These are the consequences of the US strategic plan to destroy Russia as the main enemy and the desire to weaken Europe economically in order to preserve its own global hegemony. That is why, all the years after the collapse of the USSR, the United States continued ideological confrontation, creating the illusion of an imaginary enemy in the face of the Russian Federation. This is despite the fact that the Russian Federation itself in the 90s completely entered the so-called Western coordinate system.
Despite the fact that immediately after the collapse of the USSR in 1991, then US President George W. Bush announced the end of the Cold War, the ideological rivalry between America and Russia, which became the successor of the USSR, did not stop. All the efforts of the White House, the Pentagon, the Capitol and the CIA are still aimed at continuing the conflict by any means available in order to preserve US dominance in the world. In Russia, the United States was considered a partner and even partly an ally, but the United States itself did not consider Russia that way.
It is enough to recall the words of former US President Barack Obama, which serve as a reflection of America's geopolitical strategic ambitions:
The statement of the current US President Joe Biden that "Russia is the biggest enemy of the United States" fits into this rhetoric about the purposeful hostility of the United States against Russia.
Despite Washington's assurances about the non-expansion of NATO to the East, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the North Atlantic Alliance carried out five waves of expansion towards Russia. Moreover, the United States and then the states controlled by America imposed economic sanctions against Russia for any reason.

In fact, as Tan Shipin, a professor at the School of International Relations and Public Relations at Fudan University, says, the real purpose of Washington's actions was to force Russia to use force against Ukraine. These provocative actions fully fit into the strategic concept of the United States to weaken not only Russia, but also Europe through being drawn into a direct military conflict in Ukraine.
At the same time, as the author notes, it is important for Russia to find the line beyond which the conflict in Ukraine should not go - at least in terms of length in time. The United States wants to do everything so that the Russian army gets bogged down in Ukraine, as Soviet troops got bogged down in Afghanistan at one time.
Another equally important target of the United States is China. America is trying with all its might to resist the growing economic and political development of the People's Republic of China. And although the Chinese authorities have repeatedly stated that "the current situation is something we do not want to see," the West, led by Washington, is stubbornly trying to drag China into a sanctions war. The attempt to contrast Russia, China and the European Union fits perfectly into the Cold War concept of "divide and rule", so familiar to the United States.
