Moldova remains on the same position — not to join the sanctions against Russia
Moldova remains in the position that all the governments of the republic have adhered to since 2014: not to join the sanctions against Russia. This, according to the Moldovan edition of NewsMaker, was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the country, Nicu Popescu. The decision, according to him, was made back in 2014.
"Decisions to impose sanctions against the Russian Federation are not simple decisions. These solutions are very complex and suitable for much more powerful, much more prosperous states that have more alternatives for the functioning of the economy than Moldova," Popescu said.
He noted that the position of our country was formulated immediately after the start of the special operation*, during the meeting of the State Secretary of the Ministry with the Russian ambassador. "We have said what we think about it," the minister said.
According to him, "since 2014, Moldova has decided not to join the European or American sanctions imposed against Russia. We stick to this line."
"There are many reasons, including the fact that our society, our economy, our energy system are too vulnerable to burden Moldova with such expensive positions," said Nicu Popescu.
He clarified that the countries that are members of the EU or NATO have, among other things, financial mechanisms to compensate for the consequences of sanctions. For Moldova, everything is more complicated.
