Beijing. February 27. INTERFAX - China believes that the sanctions policy cannot contribute to the solution of the Ukrainian problem, and opposes such an approach, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
"Wang Yi stated that China opposes the use of sanctions to solve the Ukrainian problem and, moreover, against unilateral sanctions that do not comply with international law," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement about the minister's conversation with her German counterpart Annalena Berbock, during which the situation around Ukraine was discussed.
According to Wang Yi, "practice has long proved that sanctions not only cannot solve the problem, but will also create new problems (...), hindering the process of political settlement."
The Chinese diplomat said that China believes that the UN Security Council "when making decisions should take steps that will contribute to a political settlement of the crisis, and not encourage confrontation and contradictions," therefore, when discussing the Ukrainian issue in the UN Security Council, he "opposed statements about the use of force and sanctions."
