Washington. February 26. INTERFAX - The United States has imposed sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the US Treasury Department reports.
Measures are also being introduced against Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Valery Gerasimov.
"We have come out on the same front with our international allies and partners to ensure that Russia will pay a serious economic and diplomatic price for further invasion of Ukraine," Finance Minister Janet Yellen said in a statement.
It notes that the United States and its partners "will continue to impose restrictive measures against "Russian elites."
In the early morning of February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. Western countries have responded by imposing sanctions against Russia.
