Due to the war in Ukraine, Lithuania introduces a state of emergency and appeals to NATO
In connection with the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine on Thursday, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced the introduction of a state of emergency in the country. After the meeting of the State Council on Defense, he said that this decision will be approved by the Seimas at an extraordinary session, Delfi reports.
"Today I also signed a decree on the introduction of a state of emergency, which will be approved by the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania at its extraordinary session. We have assessed the circumstances and are forced to take legal measures to ensure our external security," Nauseda told reporters.
The State Defense Council also decided that "Lithuania will appeal to NATO about the activation of the Fourth Article" of the North Atlantic Treaty, the head of the country noted.
The fourth article of the treaty provides for the convening of the North Atlantic Council for consultations if one of the countries of the bloc considers that there is a threat to its security.
