The head of the British MI5 security service, Ken McCallum, warned that Afghanistan is again becoming a hotbed of terrorists, and British jihadists have already tried to penetrate there.
"I am very concerned about rebuilding the terrorist infrastructure in Afghanistan," McCallum said.
Back in September, McCallum warned that MI5 was preparing to increase terrorist pressure, as the Taliban's rise to power in Afghanistan inspired extremists. And recently, McCallum said that the secret service had uncovered an attempt by British jihadists to go to Afghanistan.
According to McCallum, terrorists in Afghanistan can plan complex operations against Western countries. According to the head of counterintelligence, Afghanistan can become the same center of attraction for British extremists as Syria once became. In the past decade, hundreds of Western extremists have traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State.
The ERR portal writes that McCallum also warned about the danger of a biological attack.
"Al-Qaeda, for example, was engaged in such developments. This risk has never disappeared. The spread of the coronavirus epidemic could also inspire potential terrorists," McCallum said.
