Berlin. February 11. INTERFAX - US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a conversation about the situation around Ukraine, confirmed plans to impose tough sanctions on Russia in case of violation of Ukraine's sovereignty, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said.
"The allies are determined to take swift and tough sanctions against Russia if it comes to further violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine," he tweeted after the talks of politicians on Friday.
According to Hebestreit, all diplomatic efforts at the moment are aimed at "encouraging Moscow to de-escalate."
"We need to prevent a war in Europe," he pointed out.
Later on Friday, a representative of the British government said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also took part in the conversation.
A representative of the British Cabinet confirmed that in Friday's conversation the leaders of the United Kingdom, the United States, the EU and NATO countries discussed tough sanctions against Russia in the event of an "invasion of Ukrainian territory."
"Putin must understand that tough sanctions will be imposed, which will cause huge damage to the Russian economy and that partner countries need to continue efforts to strengthen and support the eastern borders of NATO," a British government spokesman said.
