Washington. February 8. INTERFAX - The meeting of German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has been canceled due to the refusal of the German side to provide military assistance to Kiev, CNN reports, citing an informed source.
According to a source close to the Ukrainian government, the meeting "did not take place due to the fact that the German Foreign Minister refused to declare that Germany would abandon the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, even if Russia "invades" Ukraine.
In addition, he added, the meeting was canceled due to "Germany's refusal to provide Kiev with any military assistance directly or indirectly."
"Many in Eastern Europe and Kiev increasingly see Germany as an ally of Russia rather than an ally of the West. And they behave like this - look at the former Chancellor Schroeder," said the interlocutor of the TV channel.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in an interview with CNN, said that Zelensky does not know anything about the refusal to meet with Berbok.
"She is there (in Kiev - IF). I sent her there. She will go to the front line, assess the situation," he added.
Scholz also said that Germany is working with US, NATO and EU allies to strengthen concrete steps that they will take together in the event of a "Russian invasion."
