The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan has begun work on reformatting its activities, the press service of the ministry reports.
"A special working group has been set up to assess and optimize the structure, tasks and functions of the National Security Service bodies, including the Border Guard Service and the Special Purpose Service A," the report says. Separately, the issues of restructuring the activities and strengthening the units to combat terrorism, transnational organized crime and international drug trafficking, as well as ensuring economic security will be considered.
The work is being carried out on behalf of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, which he announced in the Majilis and at a meeting of the Security Council.
It is reported that measures have already been "worked out to strengthen the combat readiness of personnel" of the KNB, and the republican operational headquarters for combating terrorism is analyzing the joint actions of law enforcement agencies and state bodies in the conditions of the ATO regime, with the development of measures to improve them.
"The result of this work will be the reorganization of the structure and approaches to the organization of operational and service activities of national security agencies," the KNB explained.
The reform of the national security system of Kazakhstan was announced by the President of the country after the January events, during which, according to official data, more than 200 people were killed, more than 4.5 thousand were injured. It was reported that when the protests turned into mass riots, groups of aggressively minded men, without meeting much resistance, attacked the police and military. In particular, they seized and looted the arsenal of the Department of the National Security Committee for Almaty (Alma-Ata), which was supposed to be protected by the Special Purpose Service "A" (special forces of the department). Its head Anuar Sadykulov was dismissed and later detained, writes Fergana News.
