Washington. February 3. INTERFAX - The United States, by transferring an additional contingent of troops to Europe, contributes to the aggravation of tensions on the continent, said the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
By deploying an additional contingent of troops, "the US de facto continues to escalate tensions in Europe," he told CNN.
He stressed that these US actions are "the best proof that we, Russia, have an obvious reason for concern."
As the Pentagon reported earlier, President Joe Biden officially approved the deployment of 3,000 US troops to Poland, Germany and Romania as part of efforts to support NATO countries in Eastern Europe.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that about 2,000 troops will be transferred from the United States to Poland and Germany. In addition, about 1,000 of the German-based military will be transferred to Romania.
Kirby said the rotation will be implemented in the coming days, but not on a permanent basis.
He stressed: "These forces are not going to fight in Ukraine."
Biden told CNN on Wednesday that his decision is "completely consistent" with what the US told Russia during the discussions.
"This is completely consistent with what I said to Putin," Biden said. He added: "As long as he acts aggressively, we will convince our NATO allies and Eastern Europe that we are with them, and the fifth article (of the NATO Charter - IF) is a sacred obligation."
