Hong Kong. January 31. INTERFAX - South Korea's Special Representative for the DPRK, No Gyu Dok, held telephone talks on Sunday with the US special representative for the DPRK, Song Kim, and the director of the Department of Asian and Oceanic Affairs of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Takehiro Funakoshi, about North Korea's launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea reports.
But Gyu Dok and Song Kim condemned the launch made by the DPRK as a challenge to the efforts of the international community to resolve the problem of the Korean peninsula diplomatically, as well as UN Security Council resolutions, the ministry said.
"(Both sides - IF) agreed to maintain a security position based on a strong alliance between South Korea and the United States, and to continue efforts to resume dialogue with North Korea as soon as possible," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, in a separate conversation with Funakosi, an agreement was reached to continue "close contacts and cooperation" in order to keep the situation on the peninsula under control.
As reported, on Sunday, North Korea launched an unidentified projectile towards the Sea of Japan. According to military experts, the projectile was a ballistic missile. According to the South Korean military, the missile was fired from the northern province of Chagan and flew about 800 km at a maximum altitude of 2000 km. This launch was the seventh by the DPRK in 2022.
