He called for the EU's participation in responding to Russia's security proposals. In addition to talking with Putin, Macron plans contacts with Zelensky
Paris. January 25. INTERFAX - French President Emmanuel Macron, during a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden and leaders of several European countries, spoke in favor of collective efforts to de-escalate the crisis in the Ukraine region, the Elysee Palace reports.
"The President of the Republic expressed serious concern about the situation near the borders with Ukraine. He stated the need for collective efforts aimed at rapid de-escalation," the French leader's office said in a press release.
Macron explained that he stands for warning the Russian Federation about the inadmissibility of a conflict with Kiev and at the same time - to intensify dialogue with Moscow. "This is exactly the kind of dialogue we are currently conducting," the document says.
In particular, Macron called for using the Normandy format for this. The Elysee Palace recalled that a "meeting at the level of advisers" will be held in Paris on January 26 within the framework of this format.
Speaking about the security talks with Russia, Macron "noted the importance of the EU being able to participate in the formulation of responses to the Russian proposals submitted in December."
The Elysee Palace confirmed that Macron expects to talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days, as well as with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
