The UK has supplied Ukraine with new ATGMS. Yesterday, January 19, the portal mil.in.ua He reported that these anti-tank missiles were NLAW (Next Generation Light Anti-tank Weapon) developed by the Swedish company Saab.
NLAW is informally known as "Javelin on minimalks". This ATGM is also equipped with an optical guidance system that allows you to hit targets in the "shot and forget" mode. At the same time, in comparison with the American ATGM, it has both advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages is the possibility of launching a rocket from confined spaces. A conditional disadvantage is the target range — up to 800 m.
Delivery of NLAW to Ukraine
The NLAW operator does not need to see the tank completely — a small fragment protruding from behind the shelter is enough. After launch, the rocket flies to the target and at a height of 1 m above it activates a cumulative charge that hits the target in the upper projection. With a declared armor penetration of 500 mm, this makes it possible to hit even the most armored vehicles with a guarantee. At the same time, lightly armored targets are hit by a direct hit.
NLAW Features
Only 5 seconds are enough to activate NLAW and capture the target, so in Saab this ATGM is considered ideal for fighting in an urban environment. NLAW is a one-time system, while weighing 12.5 kg.
NLAW has been mass-produced since 2009 and is in service with about ten countries. The UK does not disclose the volume of supplies to Ukraine, while it is indicated that this weapon is defensive, not offensive.
