Washington. January 15th. INTERFAX - The United States is considering the possibility of submitting the Ukrainian issue to the UN Security Council in the event of an aggravation of the situation due to Russia's fault, Foreign Policy writes, citing its sources.
The publication writes that although "the United States can do little at the UN to force Russia, which has the right of veto in the Security Council, to abandon the invasion of Ukraine," nevertheless, President Joe Biden hopes "to draw the attention of the world community to the problem through a public confrontation with Russia in the UN Security Council."
Biden would also like to thus "demonstrate Russia's diplomatic isolation and, if possible, drive a wedge between Russia and its most powerful ally, China," given the fact that China constantly speaks at the UN in defense of the territorial sovereignty of the world's states, the magazine notes.
The author of the publication refers to a senior American official who said that the United States "has already informed key allies in Europe and in the UN Security Council about Russian military activities and was preparing for a potential public confrontation."
The official said that Russia's military threat strikes "at the heart of the UN Charter."
