Sheltered Wings company will supply XM157 smart sights for advanced weapons of the US Army
The US Army has chosen a sighting system for next-generation small arms. The XM157 smart fire control system will be supplied by Sheltered Wings. This is reported by the Army Times.
The contract worth $2.7 billion is designed for ten years. The military plans to receive 250,000 XM157 fire control systems as part of the Next Generation Squad Weapon — Fire Control (NGSW-FC) program. L3 Harris also took part in the competition for the supply of sighting systems.
The promising system includes an optical sight with variable multiplicity, a laser rangefinder and a ballistic computer. The complex also includes a set of weather sensors and laser pointers.
The publication notes that the fire control system is designed for promising small arms, which are planned to be selected in 2022. The samples, which are being developed as part of the Next Generation Squad Weapon program, use a 6.8 mm caliber cartridge.
In 2019, it became known that a promising weapon of the US military will receive a 6.8 mm ammunition. The new models will replace the M4 submachine guns and M249 machine guns.
