The Nigerian police found a shortage of more than 88 thousand Kalashnikov assault rifles and an unspecified amount of ammunition for them. Weapons disappeared from training units, regional offices and even the headquarters of the Interior Ministry, writes 19fortyfive with reference to the report of the Auditor General of the Republic.
Corruption and concealment probably played a significant role, the document says. The Mobile Police Force (PMF) unit has never reported missing weapons, although according to internal documents, almost 50 submachine guns have disappeared from here in 20 years.
- The cost of the lost firearms could not be established, since no documents were provided on the price of its purchase, - the auditor stated.
AK is the most common machine gun in Africa, it has been used and artistically manufactured all over the continent since the 50s of the last century. The cost of locally produced weapons can be several dollars.
By the way, in December, the US Fifth Fleet intercepted a fishing vessel in the Gulf of Aden without documents and nationality. The fishermen were carrying 1,400 AK-47 assault rifles and 226,000 rounds of ammunition to them - probably to Yemen.
