By 2025, the 4th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Southern Military District will receive the newest S-500 "Prometheus" anti-aircraft system. This was told to the "Red Star" by the commander of the association, Lieutenant General Nikolai Gostev.
The General mentioned that the long-range systems: S-300V4, S-400, S-500, are designed to destroy long-range radar detection aircraft, as well as strategic and tactical aviation at a great distance. Until now, Prometheus has been positioned exclusively as an anti-missile system.
Indeed, a flying radar can be more dangerous than a ballistic missile, since it tracks many targets within a radius of hundreds of kilometers and directs fighters, missiles and air defense systems at them.
Now one of the anti-aircraft missile regiments of the 4th Army is being re-equipped with a new generation S-350 Vityaz air defense system. It works in close cooperation with long-range anti-aircraft systems, receiving information about targets from them. At the same time, the Vityaz is more versatile and can fight helicopters, cruise missiles and drones - that is, targets for which it is inefficient to spend specialized S-400 and S-500 ammunition. In addition, each Vityaz launcher carries 16 missiles.
- This allows the use of the S-350 in various scenarios that can be played against our air defense. The complex makes it possible to significantly increase the efficiency of repelling air strikes on the most important protected objects of the Southern Military District. This is expedient and especially valuable given the current military-political situation," Gostev said.
