Vilnius. January 5th. INTERFAX/BNS - A broad discussion on universal conscription is planned in Lithuania, Vice-Minister of Defense of the Republic Gilvinas Tomkus said.
"We plan to start a discussion about universal conscription in the near future. This will be a discussion between departments and in society," Tomkus told reporters on Wednesday.
Tomkus added that "it will not be easy to implement the principle of universal conscription," but this issue needs to be "resolved as soon as possible." It is planned to start a discussion with public organizations in January, he added.
The head of the Military Duty and Equipment Service, Arunas Balciunas, said that the lists of conscripts of 2022 have already been compiled, they are scheduled to be published this week.
They will include about 54 thousand conscripts aged 18-23 years, as well as young people under 26 years of age, whose service was postponed due to studies.
Of these, it is planned to call up 3 thousand 828 people to serve in various units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.
The list of military conscripts is compiled in random order, using a computer program.
