Tallinn. January 5th. INTERFAX - Estonian Defense Minister Kalle Laanet stated the need to contain Russia.
"Over the past six months, it has become clear that the security situation could escalate dramatically, but now the most important thing is to focus on containing Russia," Laanet told ERR on Wednesday.
At the same time, he said that despite the most unstable security situation in the last 30 years, "there is currently no threat from Russia to the Baltic states."
"Russia needs to understand what the consequences of an attack on Ukraine will be," Laanet said. "Therefore, in addition to diplomatic support, Estonia has decided to offer Ukraine real assistance," he added.
Laanet said that Estonia is ready, together with Germany, to donate a field hospital to Ukraine and offer rehabilitation to wounded soldiers.
Referring to Estonia's proposals to provide Ukraine with Javelin anti-tank missiles and howitzers, which caused a great reaction in society, he noted that now the Estonian authorities are finding out from the allies whether they can transfer lethal weapons to Ukraine at all, "but it will come to real things only if real military activity begins in Ukraine."
According to Laanet, Russia's proposals on security guarantees are now "not discussed either in NATO or anywhere else, but only in the media."
