Brussels. January 1st. INTERFAX - The Chinese authorities should assess the situation more objectively and not take risky steps in the military field, the head of the Taiwan administration, Tsai Ing-wen, said in a New Year's address.
"We are obliged to remind the authorities in Beijing that it is not necessary to make incorrect judgments about the situation, and that it is necessary to prevent the spread of "military adventurism," Western media quoted her as saying.
"Military (methods - IF) is definitely not an option for resolving disagreements in the area of the (Taiwan - IF) Strait. Military conflicts will affect economic stability," she explained.
According to her, Taipei and Beijing need to work on a peaceful settlement of their contradictions.
In turn, according to the media, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his New Year's speech that the full reunification of the country is the common aspiration of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
On Saturday, after Tsai Ing-wen's speech, Zhu Fenglian, a representative of the Taiwan Affairs Office at the State Council of the People's Republic of China, announced Beijing's desire to ensure the "peaceful reunification" of the parties.
"But if the separatist forces of Taiwan Independence continue to provoke and intimidate or even cross the red line, we will have to take decisive measures," she said.
She stressed that Taiwan's attempts to gain independence will only throw the island into a "deep abyss" and lead to a "great catastrophe."
