Against the background of increased military and political tension with the West, Minsk decided to purchase a new batch of the upgraded Tor-M2 small-range anti-aircraft missile system (SAM).
This was announced by the press secretary of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) Valeria Reshetnikova.
Earlier, the desire to get this air defense system was stated by the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
Currently, the republic's air defense units are armed with five Tora batteries. The debut delivery of the complexes took place in 2011-2012. The first operators were the 120th anti-aircraft missile Brigade of the Air Force and Air Defense Forces and the 740th anti-aircraft missile Brigade.
"The entry into service of new anti-aircraft missile defense equipment has allowed expanding the combat capabilities of the Air Force and the air defense forces of the armed forces for air defense," the Belarusian Defense Ministry said in a statement, Russkaya Planeta writes.
