The next tests of the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system have been conducted in the Arctic, RIA Novosti writes. On the air of Sputnik radio, Director of the Center for Military and Political Studies MGIMO Alexey Podberezkin told why the ZRS is being tested in this region.

The S-500 anti-aircraft missile system was tested in the Russian Arctic, the launch of a long-range missile was carried out on a hypersonic target, the target was successfully hit, an informed source told RIA Novosti.

The S-500 Prometheus air defense system is a universal long-range and high-altitude interception complex with an increased missile defense potential. Its radius of destruction is about 600 kilometers.

On Sputnik radio, the director of the MGIMO Center for Military and Political Studies, Doctor of Historical Sciences Alexey Podberezkin explained why the S-500 tests are taking place in the Arctic.

"The S-500 can and will be deployed in the Arctic, because the main direction for launching a missile strike or bomber aircraft is just through the North Pole, through the Arctic. For some reason, people think that when launching intercontinental missiles from the United States, missiles will fly across the Pacific Ocean. Nothing like that. All this is planned to be launched primarily through the North Pole. This direction is the most dangerous. But now it will be completely blocked from the point of view of the radar field," Alexey Podberezkin said.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the unified radar field from the North disappeared altogether, and it had to be created anew, the expert continued

"Without him, any defense is nonsense, so everything has to be done all over again. The S-500 is a strong complex, including the fact that it has a powerful radar field, the ability to control flying objects over 600 kilometers. And the ability to hit all targets – not only tactical, but also intercontinental ballistic missiles. This is what we need," concluded Alexey Podberezkin.
