MOSCOW, Dec 29 - RIA Novosti. Tests of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) have been conducted in the Russian Arctic, an informed source told RIA Novosti.
"The launch of the system's long-range missile was carried out on a hypersonic target, the target was successfully hit," the agency interlocutor said.
The source clarified that "testing of another S-550 system is not planned in the near future, as its prototypes have not yet been created, while development is underway."
S-500 "Prometheus" (ROC "Triumfator-M") belongs to a new generation of air defense systems. This is a universal long-range and high-altitude interception complex with an increased missile defense potential. Its radius of destruction is about 600 kilometers.
As previously reported by RIA Novosti sources, the S-550 air defense system is being developed as a version of the S-500 and will specialize in anti-missile and anti-space defense tasks.
