TSAMTO, December 23. The Estonian Defense Investment Center (ECDI – Estonian Centre for Defense Investment) announced the delivery to the country of the first batch of 314 units of 84-mm Karl-Gustav M4 hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers manufactured by the Swedish company Saab.
The received grenade launchers of the M4 version should replace part of the M2 and M3 systems in service with the Estonian Armed Forces and expand the possibilities of fighting modern tanks.
As reported by TSAMTO, in March 2020, in accordance with the framework agreement signed in early 2018 by the Swedish Armed Forces Material Support Agency (FMV) with Estonia and Latvia, the Estonian Armed Forces signed a contract with Saab for the supply of 84-mm Karl-Gustav M4 hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers and ammunition for them. The sale price is about 100 million Swedish kronor (about $11.67 million). Deliveries are planned for 2021-2022. Estonia is one of the 14 countries that ordered the latest version of Carl Gustaf.
The latest version of the 84 mm Karl Gustav M4 hand-held anti-tank grenade launcher is significantly reduced in weight. The mass of the M4 is 6.7 kg, which is 30% lighter than the M3, and half lighter than the 14.2-kg version of the M2. In addition to using the standard telescopic sight from the M3 version, Saab has equipped the M4 with an interface for installing advanced "intelligent" sights to increase the accuracy and probability of hitting the target.
The new version is compatible with all previously developed types of ammunition. As stated, the grenade launcher provides the launch of three types of anti-tank grenades, three types of multi-purpose grenades to destroy vehicles, buildings and structures, two types of ammunition to destroy enemy manpower, as well as smoke and lighting grenades.
