According to the ANI agency, the anti-aircraft missile system will be able to repel air threats from Pakistan and China
NEW DELHI, December 21. /tass/. India on Monday deployed the first battery of the Russian S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) on the territory of the western state of Punjab bordering Pakistan. This is reported by the ANI agency with reference to sources.
"The first S-400 battery is deployed in the Punjab sector. This air defense system will be able to repel air threats from both Pakistan and China," the agency quoted the sources as saying.
Earlier this month, Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Harsh Shringla said that Russia had begun deliveries of the S-400 missile system.
New Delhi announced its intention to purchase the S-400 in 2015. The contract for the supply of five regimental S-400 Triumph air defense systems worth $5.43 billion was signed during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India in October 2018. This caused serious dissatisfaction with Washington, which threatens to apply sanctions against states that acquire modern weapons systems and military equipment from Russia, in accordance with the CAATSA law adopted in 2017 ("On Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions").
