Baku. December 19. INTERFAX-AZERBAIJAN - President of the European Council Charles Michel welcomes Azerbaijan's decision to transfer 10 servicemen to Armenia.
"We warmly welcome the transfer of 10 Armenian servicemen by Azerbaijan as a result of negotiations with the President of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia (December 14 in Brussels - IF)," Michel wrote on Twitter.
The head of the European Council called the transfer of military personnel to Armenia "an important humanitarian gesture demonstrating the mutual will to strengthen trust (between Baku and Yerevan - IF)."
"The European Union facilitated the transfer of (military personnel - IF) to Yerevan," Michel said.
Earlier on Sunday, the Special Representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar also welcomed Azerbaijan's decision to transfer 10 servicemen to Armenia.
"I am happy that I had the opportunity to repatriate 10 Armenian servicemen," Klaar wrote on Twitter.
He called this step by Azerbaijan "an important gesture in the process of resolving humanitarian issues."
Klaar also noted that the EU will continue to work with Azerbaijan and Armenia for successful meetings of the President of the European Council with the leaders of both countries.
Azerbaijan, through the mediation of the European Union, handed over 10 servicemen to the Armenian side "These persons were detained on November 16, 2021 in the process of preventing provocation by the Armenian Armed Forces in the Kelbajar direction of the state border," the state Commission for Prisoners of War, hostages and missing citizens said in a statement.
In turn, the Armenian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Baku handed over ten more military personnel to Yerevan.
