Washington. December 18. INTERFAX - US Defense Ministry spokesman John Kirby did not answer a question about a possible buildup of US and NATO troops on the alliance's "eastern flank" in connection with the situation around Ukraine, citing his lack of information on this issue.
"I have no information regarding the new rotation and deployment, which I could say, referring to our NATO allies. We have significant potential in this region. Part of it is on a permanent basis, part is on a rotational basis," he said at a briefing at the Pentagon.
At the same time, he recalled that the US President's national security adviser Jake Sullivan had previously said that in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine and provided that "some of our NATO allies ask for additional capabilities or rotation, we will be determined to positively consider it."
"But today I have no information about such requests and any movements to talk about them," Kirby said.
At the same time, he said that the Pentagon "continues to monitor the situation in Russia and Ukraine."
