Ukraine's ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk believes that Kiev should not expect arms supplies from Berlin under the new Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Melnik was asked whether it was worth waiting for the new government of Germany to cancel the blocking of supplies of anti-drone rifles to Ukraine.
"I think it would be too optimistic to expect that Chancellor Olaf Scholz's cabinet will have some other course," Melnik said in an interview. zn.ua .
According to him, the previous leadership of Germany explained the refusal to provide weapons as a potential military escalation of the conflict in the Donbass, despite the "occupation by Russia" of part of the territory of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian ambassador believes that Berlin will maintain the same "illogical" position under Scholz. At the same time, according to him, Kiev will continue to convince the German authorities that the country needs weapons to "deter new aggression," and not provocation.
"This is very disappointing, because right now the moment of truth has come for us, it's time to understand who is a true friend not only in words, but also in deeds," Melnik said.
On November 25, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba said that he sees no restrictions on the supply of weapons from Germany, the country will raise this issue in negotiations with the new German government.
In August, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kiev expects help from Berlin in equipping the navy. Ukraine also expects that Germany "will be a partner of Ukraine in a technical sense," Zelensky added.
It is noted that in the spring, the co-chairman of the Green Party of Germany, Robert Habek, visited Ukraine. Then he advocated the sale of defensive weapons to Kiev.
