Washington. December 8th. INTERFAX - The Senate of the American Congress, by 67 votes to 30, rejected a resolution put forward by a number of senators prohibiting the sale of medium-range air-to-air missiles and multiple launch rocket systems to Saudi Arabia, local media reported.
A number of US congressmen criticize Riyadh for participating in the conflict in Yemen, which is considered one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the world.
"Exporting more missiles to Saudi Arabia does nothing but aggravate this conflict and adds fuel to the already raging fire," said Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the authors of the banning resolution.
The draft document proposed banning military supplies to the kingdom without guarantees that American equipment would not be used to kill civilians.
At the same time, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democrat Bob Menendez, said: "I fully agree with the need to hold the Saudi leadership accountable for various actions... But I also think it is important that our security partners know that we will fulfill our obligations."
The administration of President Joe Biden said earlier that it strongly opposes the ban on the supply of missiles.
