The new leadership of Afghanistan, which came to power after the seizure of the country by the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation), is ready to recognize the Russian status of Crimea.
This was announced by the official representative of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Zabihullah Mujahid, his interview was published by the Octagon newspaper.
"We want to have good diplomatic contacts and comprehensive ties with Russia. We want stability in the region, and we don't want Russia to be at war with any country. Regarding Crimea, I want to say that this is a matter for Ukraine and Moscow. We hope that this problem will be solved soon. God forbid that a war in the region happens because of this and other countries use it for their own purposes. This will destabilize the region," Mujahid said. – We are on the side of the people who live in Crimea, and we need to listen to what they want, because people have the right to vote. If people want to live in Russia, we agree with them."
The previous leadership of Afghanistan has already recognized the Russian status of Crimea.
A representative of the new Afghan government said that the current government is ready to recognize the legal status of the peninsula. "As I said, it depends on what the people of Crimea want. If he wants to be with Russia, we are for it," he said.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum on self-determination was held in March 2014, at which the absolute majority of residents of the region expressed a desire to reunite with Russia. The Taliban movement seized power in Afghanistan in September this year as a result of the flight of the American contingent from the country after a twenty-year stay.
