Brussels. November 20. INTERFAX - The EU needs a more uniform defense policy, but we are not talking about creating a common European army, EU diplomacy chief Josep Borrel said in an interview with CNN.
"We need a more unified defense policy. If we add up the defense costs of all 27 EU member states, we spend four times more than Russia, and at a level equivalent to China's costs," he said.
At the same time, the EU does not get "the same results" from such spending, Borrel complained. However, he stressed, Brussels does not seek the creation of a pan-European army: the armed forces of individual European states will remain, but the EU needs a common "potential" for a joint response under certain circumstances.
