The export of the S-500 anti-aircraft system may begin in a few years, Rosoboronexport reported. The first deliveries of the S-500 to the Russian army are planned before the end of the year. On the air of Sputnik radio, expert Yuri Kotenok spoke about the features of this system.

Deliveries abroad of the latest Russian anti-aircraft air defense system-the S-500 missile defense system may begin in a few years, Alexander Mikheev, Director General of Rosoboronexport, told RIA Novosti.

"The launch of the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft missile system to the foreign market is expected in the next few years. Currently, permits have not been issued for it," Mikheev said at the end of the Dubai Airshow 2021 exhibition.

The first deliveries of the S-500 to the Russian army are planned before the end of the year.

On the air of Sputnik radio, a military observer, editor-in-chief of the portal "Today.<url>" Yuri Kotenok told about the distinctive features of this system.

"The fundamental difference of the S-500 complex is its ability to hit low-orbit targets, that is, in fact, it works at cosmic heights. It can also shoot down ballistic targets that are either on the verge of hypersonic speed or at hypersonic speed, this is another fundamental difference between the S-500 complex and similar developments of manufacturers from Western countries," said Yuri Kotenok.

According to him, the potential demand in the world for the latest Russian anti-aircraft systems is quite large.

"What our competitors offer on the market of anti-aircraft missile systems is losing to us. We saw, for example, how the Americans got into a puddle with their Patriot systems, which were guarding (oil refineries) in Saudi Arabia. The (Yemeni) Houthis shelled these factories using devices that were far from the newest in technical terms, and Patriot could not intercept them. Against this background, Russian-made complexes occupy a winning position," the military observer believes.

The S-500 Prometheus belongs to a new generation of ground-to-air air defense systems. The system is capable of hitting ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as aerodynamic targets (airplanes, helicopters, etc.). The radius of destruction of the S-500 is about 600 kilometers. The system can detect and simultaneously hit up to ten ballistic supersonic targets, including blocks of hypersonic missiles.
